Cassago Brianza

Cassago Brianza is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Lecco in the Italian region Lombardy, located about northeast of Milan and about southwest of Lecco. Cassago Brianza borders the following municipalities: Barzanò, Bulciago, Cremella, Monticello Brianza, Nibionno, Renate, Veduggio con Colzano.
It is considered the place ("Rus Cassiciacum") where Saint Augustine, one of the four most important Doctors of the Christian Church, spent the fall and winter before he was baptised.
The village is part of the historical region of Brianza, because it belonged to the Pieve of Missaglia, one of the territorial institution (along with ''Curtis Casalensis'' and others) who gave rise to the aggregation of Medieval communes named ''Universitas'' and ''Vicariatus'' "''Briantiae''", a «little republic or, more precisely, an autonomous province within the State of Milan».〔V. Longoni, ''La piccola repubblica del Monte di Brianza'', in "Brianze", n. 2, settembre-ottobre 1998, pp.39-42, cit. in F. Pirovano, D. F. Ronzoni, ''Uomini, animali, santi nella cultura popolare di Brianza'', Bellavite 2001. In Italian.〕 For its location, the village of Cassago can be considered today the geographical focus of Brianza (in the modern sense), who has considerably enlarged its extent〔The name Brianza dates back to the pre-Roman period, and referred only to the lands of Quattrocento's ''Universitas'' and ''Vicariatus Montis Briantiae''. The extension of the term to wester and souther lands is due to the desire of every notable Milanese family to can say to have a villa in Brianza, so they extended the borders of the term more as they could.〕 during 18th century by influence of the Milanese point-of-view due to the new-born fashion for the rich people of Milan to make tourism in Brianza. In facts, Cassago has roughly the same distance to Brivio (the traditional east border of Brianza) and to Cantù (the new-fashion west border of Brianza), to Canzo (the traditional north border of Brianza) and to Biassono region (the new-fashion south border of Brianza).
